For the 50th anniversary of the Festival of Vermar the grape throwing, stamping, wine drinking and dancing are bound to be bigger and better than ever!

Binissalem, a wine-growing region in Mallorca, celebrates the most important weeks of the year when summer comes to an end and the grapes have been harvested. This weekend from 19 to 21 September the festival will include a parade of floats, a grape Battle and a competition in grape stamping. The past week has already been filled with wine tastings, wine cellar tours, barrel rolling competitions and numerous other dances, feasts and merriment. But this weekend sees by far the largest of the attractions and celebrations with the infamous Grape Battle taking place at noon on Saturday in the centre of Binissalem - if you are on Mallorca this is an event certainly not to be missed! In how many other situations throughout the year is it appropriate to throw grapes at random strangers??

The festival continues into next week with more feasts, community parties, traditional dancing and musical performances and wine fairs. The Spanish fiestas are well known for their community spirit and the bringing together of generations to celebrate together and this one is no different, in fact, if anything it is even more the case for the Fiesta des Vermar. On Friday 26th September the streets of the town are closed and residents put their tables and chairs in front of their houses and invite passers by to dinner. This must certainly be one of the most welcoming and inclusive festivals to take place on Mallorca!

So don't miss out on all the fun and action this weekend - head into the centre of this beautiful Island and join the town of Binissalem in celebrating their 50th annual Fiesta des Vermar!
