What's on in September - Mallorca Island

A quick review of the upcoming events to look out for

featured in News & reviews Author Trine Bregstein, Mallorca Reporter Updated

As the low season draws closer and the kids go back to school you would think that summer would be coming to an end...but not on the beautiful Island of Mallorca! Apart from the glorious sunshine and sandy beaches there are still events happening all across the Island that you can get involved in...

If it’s art that you’re after then there’s certainly plenty going on, here’s a small selection:

  • Gabinet: 6x6 a photography exhibition at Es Baluard in Palma is on until the 7th
  • Just Add Water at CCA (Centre for Contemporary Art) in Andratx is an exploration of water, in a variety of mediums, paint, photography, video and is on until the 14th
  • Also at CCA Andratx is the exhibition of Annette Abrahmson’s paintings in a collection called Genre-Myth-Time
  • Beautiful paintings with a nature theme can be found at the Auditorio de Alcúdia painted by Toni Sastre and exhibited until the 28th
  • Reproductions of Leonardo Da Vinci’s greatest inventions can be found at the Fundacion Sophia in Palma until the 30th

Festivals
The first weekend in September sees the Beata festival in Santa Margalida, complete with a patron saint and devils with cow bells sewn on to their clothing. Saturday and Sunday are the main events, with Sunday being a whole day of religious/folk celebrations starting with the devils waking the townsfolk and ending with a procession of floats depicting the life of Saint Catalina and the smashing of clay jugs.

On the 11th of September it is a national holiday throughout the islands on account of the Diada de Catalunya.

During the course of the month you have several festivals to choose from, one for melons and one for wine and one to celebrate King Jaime I. Binissalem celebrates the Festes des Vermar which for nine days turns the town into a celebration of everything wine related with plenty of tradition, culture and good wine of course. Highlights include the demon night or correfoc, where the demons take over the town and dance amongst the fireworks and the grape battle, which is just that, this one gets messy! The watermelon festival takes place in Vilafranca de Bonany, marking the end of the harvest, with various activities including the largest melon contest. Rei en Jaume festivities take place in Santa Ponsa and run from the 8th – 15th with concerts, exhibitions, fire night, traditional dancing and a medieval market where you can try all sorts of curious food and drink.

The Cirque de Soleil is back in Palma with their new show Drallion and that is showing until the 6th of September.

Music
At Mallorca Rocks there will be performances by the Kaiser Chiefs and the Kooks, Reverend and the Makers, Shy FX and Kissy Sell Out in September, the very last ones as this is to be the last summer for Mallorca Rocks. For lovers of Classical music there are Orchestral Musical Evenings in Deia at the Sant Joan Baptista Church and later in the month the 36th International Musical Festival where the works of Chopin, Mozart, Beethoven amongst others, will be showcased. For Jazz enthusiasts you have the 14th Jazz Festival happening in Alcúdia on the 6th at the auditorium alternatively you could head to Bunyola for the 30th music festival there showcasing, violinists, pianists, viola and cello players. Solar Fest is on the 12th at Son Fusteret in Palma with performances by Crystal Fighters, Klaxons and many more. On the 19th you can head to the Barcelo Hotel Formentor for their Sunset Classics and see Dame Kiri Te Kanawa perform with members of the Balearic Symphony Orchestra.

Sports
Magaluf, infamous this summer for its raunchy shenanigans, will be hosting the Rolling Stock Grand Prix at Karting Magaluf on the 13th, which will be a fun day out for all. If cricket is your thing then there is a cricket match between the Mallorca Cricket Club and Collingtree CC, also held in Magaluf on the 10th, clubhouse and bar open for teas and everyone is welcome, starting at 1pm.

Throughout the month there are other little fairs and fiestas about, such as the Almond fair in Santa Margalida on the 21st, medieval fair in Manacor on the same day or the Sant Miquel fair in Felanitx on the 28th. Of course there are all the usual markets on as well throughout the month, so you will have plenty to keep you busy!
