Winter Shut Down for Many of The Super Clubs

Change in tourism over last few years prompts changes

featured in News & reviews Author Pam Williamson, Mallorca Editor Updated

From October 20th this year many of the better known nightclubs will close their doors until March 2015, with the possible exception of Christmas and New Year openings.

The change has come after a noticeable drop in business for clubs in the off season, which has become more and more evident over the last few years. This time of year is just not profitable for the clubs and they have even ruled out the possibility of weekend openings which would have been the norm in previous years. Many of the super clubs are not regularly frequented by Island residents, meaning that even local business would not be enough to sustain their business interests during this time.

There has also been a shift in the type of tourist visiting the Island in the off season, tending to be older and more sporty. As we have seen over the last few weeks Mallorca has become a haven for road cyclists, triathletes and with the recent addition of the Ironman Mallorca to the calendar, much of the tourism comes from these areas. Athletes plus their families, friends and supporters during competitions, and the road cyclists who have started descending in their hoards to Mallorca to enjoy the beautiful scenery and pleasant autumn climate, are not visiting the nightclubs and prefer instead the smaller 'cantina' or cafe style venues for a night out.

Perhaps the best known of the clubs, Pacha, has already closed its doors, due to lack of customers. BCM nightclub has reduced its opening times to three days a week but will also close completely on the 20th October. At the moment Tito's, Mallorca's oldest night club, is set to remain open at the weekends until the end of November but plans after that are for it to remain shut until March 2015.

Profitability has been the only reason given for this change but as time fast runs out, it might well be time to get on your party shoes and head to Palma for one last big night! Let's hope that these closures mean that they will pull out all the stops to make the Christmas and New Year celebrations even bigger and better than ever before...
