Horse Riding in Soller & the Tramuntana Mountains

by Shirley Roberts | Mallorca & Soller Correspondent | published: 17th May, 2012

The Soller holiday experience has it all in my opinion. The Moors named the town and gave it the name 'Suliar' which means 'golden bowl' – a great description of the Soller valley sitting in the middle of stunning mountain scenery. The debate is often mountains or beach today for holidaymakers and it is a dilemma. ...more

Easter in Soller, Mallorca

by Shirley Roberts | Mallorca & Soller Correspondent | published: 3rd Apr, 2012

Easter week or 'Semana Santa' as it is known is a very important time in Soller. The town divides up into fraternities – groups of people attached to a local church who have an affinity to a particular group of penitents. The penitents dress in the robes of their particular fraternity and this includes wearing pointed hats, reminiscent of the Ku Klux Klan, with eye holes cut out and the rest of the face covered. ...more

New beach for the Port of Soller, Majorca

by Shirley Roberts | Mallorca & Soller Correspondent | published: 23rd Mar, 2012

The Port of Soller is on the North West coast of Mallorca, nestling in the foothills of the Tramuntana mountain range. In my opinion we have got it all here – from the majestic mountains that surround us down to our perfect horse shoe bay. Despite a thirty year association with the place, I would never have envisaged what is happening here today. ...more

by Shirley Roberts | Mallorca & Soller Correspondent | published: 19th Mar, 2012

Living near the sea in the Port of Soller, Majorca, has many advantages.  Waking to the sight of the perfect horse shoe bay surrounded by mountains is still a thrill.  The beach is coming to life with strategically placed tin bins which are used by the local bar owners to burn the bamboo. ...more

Running Mallorca's 'Mancor Extrem'The Cursa de Muntanya race series

by Anthony Cassidy | | published: 12th Mar, 2012

Extreme by name, extreme by nature. The race up and down Puig Massanella from the picturesque village of Mancor de la Vall is considered by many to be the toughest race in the Cursa de Muntanya race series. This year’s race was made all the more difficult because local landlords would not allow runners to cross their land on the return from the peak. ...more

The Soller train celebrates its 100th birthday

by Shirley Roberts | Mallorca & Soller Correspondent | published: 9th Mar, 2012

The mountains that surround the Soller valley met their conqueror 100 years ago.  The thinkers of the hidden valley knew that progress was going to be impossible unless they ended Soller's mountain isolation.  At the turn of the century Soller was a boom town trading in cotton and oranges and moving these goods other than by sea was, quite simply, impossible.   The majestic mountains and, in particular, the Alfabia mountain range prevented passengers and goods being transported to the island’s main port in Palma de Mallorca.  ...more

The ancient coastal towers of Mallorca

by Linda Hewitt | Mallorca Correspondent | published: 7th Mar, 2012

Having been invaded by just about everyone, it isn't altogether too surprising to find that a certain amount of suspicion is embedded into the psyche of the Mallorquines. Let us take a look at the ancient coastal towers of Mallorca and their role in protecting its inhabitants during these dangerous times. ...more

Geocachers find the hidden treasure

Treasure hunting with a difference in MallorcaAn introduction to geocaching

by Anna Arbuckle | Mallorca Correspondent | published: 27th Feb, 2012

I first heard the term geocaching when I was invited to spend my New Year’s day walking up a mountain near Andratx, up to the Puig de sa Garrafa; an easy to moderate walk with a spectacular and useful view from Calvia town all the way over Andratx village to Port Andratx. A watchtower at the top is occupied by a fire watchman throughout summer. It's obvious how a column of smoke, the tell-tale sign of a forest fire in the making, can easily be spotted from this vantage point. I'm just glad I don't have to walk up and down that mountain every day to do my job. ...more

A Soller Sunday walk

by Shirley Roberts | Mallorca & Soller Correspondent | published: 19th Feb, 2012

Winter Sundays are made for walking and Sollerics love to walk.  The mountain paths and picnic areas are busy at weekends with local people enjoying the beautiful countryside on their doorstep.  We set off on Sunday for one of the town’s favourite places, Ses Tres Creus ('the three crosses').  The site was created in a cave on the lower slopes of the mountains that dominate Soller.  According to legend, it was a safe place, created to hide all the important artefacts from the churches when the town was under siege from pirates.  The local people carried their treasures on this well trodden path, hid them deep in the cave and then returned to town via the grassy slopes . No hint of where the gold was held and no chance of a random pirate finding their way there.  The three crosses is where the townspeople said 'bring it on' to the marauders secure in the knowledge that they had a great hiding place. ...more

Soller: film, lights and location

by Shirley Roberts | Mallorca & Soller Correspondent | published: 12th Feb, 2012

Under the layer of clothes needed to live in Soller at the moment we all hibernate. Scarves, gloves, thick coats and boots are the fashion of choice and necessity. Not too many people are worried about their image - they just want to be warm. Anyone not wrapped up causes a bit of interest and consternation about their well being. Except, that is, if you are on a photo shoot and want to announce to the world how famous, trendy or just plain cool you are. The photographers and stars doing a pre launch for a German film strutted their stuff round town this week. We all watched the interaction between the lovelies as they took over the warm spot in the Café after coming in from the cold in their impossibly tight, thin, t shirts and jeans. I know that image is everything but all I could think was that they would be catching their death of cold. It must be the granny in me. ...more

The Fiestas of Sant Antoni & Sant Sebastian in MallorcaA week of traditional celebrations

by Anna Arbuckle | Mallorca Correspondent | published: 19th Jan, 2012

Spain, being predominantly Catholic, worships its saints devoutly. Every day of the year has a saints name associated with it and some are honoured with celebrations. Winter picnics in the Tramuntana

by Shirley Roberts | Mallorca & Soller Correspondent | published: 9th Jan, 2012

The January day was just a little foggy, with the promise of brightness to come and a winter picnic beckoned.  The ingredients for a Soller picnic are a crowd of friends all bringing food, a few chefs ready to cook, a little alcohol or hot coffee and plenty of space for the children to play.  The Kings (or Three Wise Men) had arrived the night before and all the special days of the Spanish Christmas/New Year/ three kings celebrations were at an end. No better way to kick start another year than a communication with nature, high in the mountains in the company of good friends. ...more

A visit to Estellenchs, a bodega and the Sa Plana 'agroturismo' hotel

by Linda Hewitt | Mallorca Correspondent | published: 25th Nov, 2011

The drive or bus ride to the small mountain village of Estellenchs, in the southwest corner of Mallorca, is quite breathtaking in its beauty. If sand, sangria and discos are your thing then read no further. However, for the discerning lover of pure and unspoiled Mediterranean countryside read on. How to get there? If you have a car at your disposal, so much the better. If not, head to the Plaza España underground bus terminal in central Palma and take the red and yellow IB 11 or 217 (beware, the numbers are frequently changed just to keep you on your toes! Obviously, the key is to look for the names of the villages (Palma) – Esporles – Banyalbufar – Estellenchs).  If you are fortunate enough to miss the last bus back (18.05, when I enquired) you could do a lot worse than to check into the small, family run hotel called Sa Plana, but more of that later.  ...more

An adrenaline filled trip to the Jungle Parc, Santa Ponsa

by Anna Arbuckle | Mallorca Correspondent | published: 3rd Nov, 2011

It's been years since I had a pure, adventure invoked adrenaline rush. Let's face it, I'm forty, a mum and no longer the sporty type I once was. The most extra exercise my heart gets, these days, is watching my son doing stunts, so more like second-hand adrenaline. ...more
