Ran de Mar - Restaurant Review, Port de Soller

It’s stunning horseshoe bay has turquoise blue waters and is framed beautifully by the surrounding Tramuntana mountains. With a couple of charming hotels and small but perfectly formed beaches, it is one of Mallorca’s cutest coastal resorts. Recent investment by the Jumeirah Hotel Group - their uber-luxurious Port Soller Hotel & Spa is due to open on the 24th April 2012 - and by the council has brought about a re-modelling of the seafront and the creation of a new beach. Once all the works are complete (presumably before the summer season!) the promenade will be one of the finest in Majorca. ...more

It is where most of the buses & trains start their journeys, and where you catch the traditional wooden train to Soller. As such, there are a number of less refined dining establishments in the area, where you can fork out not insignificant sums for rather ordinary fare (no transport pun intended!). So it is good to know that there are some seriously good alternatives in the vicinity where you are guaranteed a good feed at a decent price. ...more

Once a monastery, this imposing building has been beautifully restored and then modernised to create the classic old-meets-new interior - we were immediately impressed... So after an impromptu shopping trip on of Avinguda Jaume III, we found ourselves on C/Bonaire (which is just off this main shopping thoroughfare). Es Moli Restaurant, Sant Elm

A pretty little fishing village, Sant Elm is the closest port to the national park of Sa Dragonera. The scenery in this part of the island is very tropical. With gentle pine-covered hills, palm trees and aquamarine seas, you can almost imagine that you are in the Caribbean. This is not a built up resort - in fact there are only four hotels - so we had thought to stop at one of the little rustic fish restaurants on the front and enjoy the lovely sea views. But as we trundled just beyond the town centre, we passed by a rather discrete but stylish looking restaurant called Es Moli. ...more

Our rather ill-timed destination was the wineries of Binissalem - it was enough to make us break out into a cold sweat. They tend to be housed in (very) grand properties surrounded by beautiful countryside, and offer a unique escape from everyday living. One such hotel is the Castillo Hotel in Son Vida, about a 10 minute drive to the north west of Palma. It's fabulous location in the hills above Palma give rise to wonderful views of the city and the sea beyond. Add to this the fact that the hotel really is in a castle (albeit one built at the beginning of the 20th century), and you have all the ingredients of an establishment normally only witnessed in James Bond films. ...more

Parisian to boot, the pressure was on to find somewhere suitably ‘chic et sophistiqué, cherie' to impress our visitors on a Friday night in Mallorca. And in fact, it wasn't too difficult to think of several places in Palma that may fit that description. Maricel Senzone Restaurant, Cala Major

So there are definitely times when you need to take yourself away from it all, and just stop. A world of five-star luxury perhaps, where you can be cocooned from the outside world for a short time. One such place within easy reach of Palma de Mallorca is the Hospes Maricel Hotel, located on the seafront in Cala Major, Majorca. The Frenchman and I had clocked this place a while ago, and had decided that this was the ideal place to escape to in times of stress. Sadly unable to stay for a night, we had opted instead for a simple dinner in their Senzone Restaurant. Run by a chef of the same name, Koldo Royo had gained rave reviews and was considered a flagship restaurant in Palma. I said that I was sure it had closed down a couple of years ago. Restaurant Review - Trianon, Port d'Andratx

So we parked up and had a wander around the back streets and the waterfront, perusing menus and clientele. As you might expect, there are a host of fish restaurants, ranging from rustic local hang-outs to smart, linen-tablecloth establishments.
