Traditional rural town & wine growing region in central Majorca

Binissalem is a small village, semi-industrialised on the outskirts due to it's prime role in the wine industry. If you order Mallorcan wine in a restaurant, it will probably come from Binissalem. Viticulture was introduced here by the Romans and has survived and been revived & improved in recent years.

The reputation of Binissalem red wines, made with the local grape Manto Negro, has been growing during the last 20 years or so. Local growers are passionate about their product and are dedicated to raising the profile of Majorcan wine. The best-known bodega, Jose L Ferrer, is on the right as you enter the town from Palma. Binissalem hosts a wonderful festival in the third week of September - the Festa d'es Vermar. Plenty of local produce and all things wine appear on the streets at this time, including special recipes featuring grapes and wine, and of course, many opportunities to taste the local brew. A feature of this festival is the Grape fight, where locals (and brave visitors) dress up in white clothing and then pelt each other with bunches of grapes. It has to be seen to be believed!
