Most have just a small selection of dried organic foods rather than fresh produce. You can pick up organic cereals, pastas and grains, spices, herbs, teas and condiments. A good selection of hair and facial products are also available, along with toothpastes and baby lotions. By far the biggest organic and natural food store in Palma is Terra Verda (C / La protective No.10) which has a good selesction of fresh fruit and vegetables, along with a wide range of cosmetics, dried organic food, a macrobiotic section, books, and nutritional supplements. As in other parts of Europe, Mallorca has seen many new, state-of-the-art gyms and fitness centres open up over the past few years - no doubt helped by the fact that the climate means bearing flesh for most of the year! You can choose from local authority run centres, or splash out on a private members gym. Some gyms will offer day memberships for visitors. Many of the hotels also have private gyms available for your use. Yoga studios are also listed here.

by Nicola Henderson | Site Editor | published: 31st Jul, 2010The Frenchman and I arrived in Port d’Andratx without really knowing where we wanted to eat. So we parked up and had a wander around the back streets and the waterfront, perusing menus and clientele. As you might expect, there are a host of fish restaurants, ranging from rustic local hang-outs to smart, linen-tablecloth establishments. This area of Mallorca is much loved by the German as well as the British community, so many of the restaurants are German-run. ...read more

Evenings in Mallorca are made for sitting on a terrace, sipping a beer or 'cafe con hielo' and enjoying a 'terulia' (chat) until early morning. People start to go out around 10.00pm and bars stay open until 3 or 4am - then it's time to hit the nightclubs. Palma has a bustling bar scene, with the main late night bars on the small narrow streets behind Placa Llotja. As well as housing some of the more funky bars, many of the cafes and tapas bars provide a relaxed setting for having a drink throughout the evening. More upmarket bars can be found on the Avinguda Gabriel by the harbour. This is also where you will find a number of nightclubs.

Most of the clubs are found in the major resorts in the southern end of the island, and of course, Palma. You can find DJ bars, up-market nightclubs, jazz clubs, and other live music venues. Many of then open late (very late, as in 2:00 or 3:00 AM!) and you can easily keep partying way after the dawn has arrived.

Wine making has been part of the culture of Mallorcan living for centuries (and yep, it was those ubiquitous Romans again who first brought vines to the island). The industry prospered from the 14th century right up until the end of the 19th century, when the vines were attached by a plague of phylloxera. The wine industry was wiped out, and much of the agricultural land was replanted with almonds. A small number of vines were re-introduced but only enough for local consumption. During the 20th century, the wines produced on the island lacked finesse, and a great deal of the wine consumed in Mallorca was imported from mainland Spain.
