Bars & Drinking Culture in Mallorca

Evenings in Mallorca are made for sitting on a terrace, sipping a beer or 'cafe con hielo' and enjoying a 'terulia' (chat) until early morning. People start to go out around 10.00pm and bars stay open until 3 or 4am - then it's time to hit the nightclubs. Palma has a bustling bar scene, with the main late night bars on the small narrow streets behind Placa Llotja. As well as housing some of the more funky bars, many of the cafes and tapas bars provide a relaxed setting for having a drink throughout the evening. More upmarket bars can be found on the Avinguda Gabriel by the harbour.  This is also where you will find a number of nightclubs.

Nightclubs & Dancing

Most of the clubs are found in the major resorts in the southern end of the island, and of course, Palma.  You can find DJ bars, up-market nightclubs, jazz clubs, and other live music venues.  Many of then open late (very late, as in 2:00 or 3:00 AM!) and you can easily keep partying way after the dawn has arrived.

Dinner & Theme Shows

A recent arrival in Mallorca is the 'themes dinner show and spectacle', which can be anything from folklore and flamenco dancing to a medieval banquet complete with jousting and serving wenches. These shows are basicailly aimed at tour groups. You can book at any resort hotel, but don't go unless you are prepared to abandon your inhibitions and join in the fun.  You can have an altogether more classy affair by dining at the Casino or taking in one of the Broadway style shows.

Gay Nightlife

Palma is the place to come for gay & lesbian nightlife.  There are around 30 bars, cafes and clubs in the Gomila district of Palma, below Bellver Castle.  The gay scene is laid back, friendly and more 'Spanish' than 'International', which reflects the large, permanent gay population of Palma.
