The beaches in Mallorca range from long white sandy beaches, to isolated rocky coves. Many of them are popular with tourist and locals alike, but it is still possible to find a peaceful spot if you are prepared to get off the beaten track. Some of the nicest beaches tend to have resorts attached to them, so they are busy but the upside of this is that they have extensive facilities and are great for families and children.

Mallorca has 41 marinas, 30 clubs nautics and mooring for 10,000 yachts. Yachts can be chartered locally and most marinas also have facilities for water-skiing and windsurfing. Highlights of the sailing year include the King's Cup in August, the Princess Sofia trophy at Easter, and the Rei en Jaume regatta in July when a flotilla of yachts will recreate the 185-km journey made by Jaume the Conqueror when he landed at Santa Ponsa in 1229.

There are wind surfing and kite surfing schools at several of the larger resorts and it is also possible to hire equipment without tuition. Beaches where windsurfing is available include Cala Millor, Cala d'Or, Can Picafort, Formentor, Magaluf, Palma Nova, Peguera, Platja de Palma, Port d'Alcudia, Port de Pollensa, Port de Soller, Portalss and Santa Ponsa. One of our favourite places to windsurf/kitesurf is Son Serra de Marina, on the north-east coast, five miles east of Can Picafort. This is a truly unspoilt beach and a place of magnificent natural beauty. With sand dunes and surf, and glorious mountains in the background, it's a favourite for nature lovers too. Best of all though, is the groovy El Sol Sunshine beach bar, which is open throughout the year. You can read all about it in our beach life report.
