Boat Trip to Formentor Beach, Mallorca

Take a boat from Puerto Pollensa to vist Formentor Beach

featured in Beach reviews Author Jane Leitch, Mallorca Reporter Updated

During the summer months there are plenty of opportunities to take boat trips across the calm sea in the North of Mallorca. There is a regular boat service from the popular tourist town of Puerto Pollensa to the beach at Formentor, where the sea is clear blue and the sand is soft.

You can purchase tickets for the boat at the kiosk in Port Pollenca marina which is located next to the jetty where the boat sets off from, behind the restaurant ‘Stay’. Tickets for the trip are 11€ return for adults and 5.50€ for children. The boat takes around 25 minutes and sets off at 11am,12pm,1pm,3pm and 4pm with boats returning every 30 minutes after that, with the last boat returning from Formentor at 6pm.

There are plenty of places to sit on the boat, the most popular being the top deck where you can enjoy the sea breeze running through your hair and take in the fabulous views whilst soaking up the sun. There is also sheltered seating on the lower deck and an area at the front of the boat. It is best to get there prompt for the boat leaving so that you can get your pick of seats as it can get quite busy during the busiest weeks in the summer.

The 25 minutes spent on the boat travelling from Puerto Pollensa to Formentor is an ideal opportunity to take in the views of the bay and to get a closer look at the lighthouse at Cap de Formentor and La Fortaleza, one of Spain’s most impressive estates. Once past the Cap de Formentor, the water becomes a bit choppy and the fabulous Formentor Hotel buried in the pine trees comes into view. You can also see small bays that are popular for jet skis and speed boats to stop for a swim and a bit of lunch.

The beach at Formentor is stunning, especially the clear blue water. There is plenty of natural shade on the beach provided by huge pine trees that overhang the sand, this does however make the normally very soft sand a bit prickly with pine needles. Apart from this, the shade allows you to set up camp for the day and not get baked in the hot summer sun, although if you do get a bit too hot lying on the beach, the water is lovely for swimming and generally quite calm. Boats are restricted by a boat lane so they don’t get too close to the shore, so you can swim carefree without dodging boats, windsurfs or sailors. There is also a lifeguard on duty throughout most of the day.

The boat trip is very popular and it is recommended to get there early to bag yourself a spot on the beach. There are plenty of sun loungers available to rent for the day, prices are 4.50€ for a sunbed and 13.50€ for two sunbeds and a parasol.

There is also a cafeteria which serves both hot and cold food such as baguettes, sandwiches, pizzas and burgers. It's also an ideal place to grab a drink.

If you don’t fancy taking the boat trip but still want to enjoy the beach at Formentor, the road up through the mountains is also great for getting a bird’s-eye view of Puerto Pollensa as you wind up the road. On the way up there are viewpoints where you can stop to catch the breathtaking views of the sea and mountains of the Serra de Tramuntana which is the mountain range forming the backbone of the North side of Mallorca. Once you arrive at Formentor there is a carpark located a few minutes walk from the beach.
