Religious & Historic Buildings

 soller cathedral

Mallorca is blessed with many majestic cathedrals and sacred religious sites, reflecting its Christian background.  From the magnificent Palma Cathedral to Lluc Sanctuary - Mallorca's most sacred site - a former monastery in a spectacular setting in the Serra de Tramuntana.  Moorish influence is also still visible in the Islamic architecture of the Palau de L'Almundaina and the Arab Baths in Palma.

Castles & Ruins

 watch tower ruin

Not surprisingly for an island, Mallorca has a number of castles and watch-towers decorating its coastline.  Castell d'Alaro, Castell de Bellver and Capdepera Castle are all worth a trip.  The Bronze Age ruins of Capocorb Vell are the most significant remains of the Talaiotic culture and can be found to the south of Llucmajor.

A number of grand manor houses are open to the public in Mallorca.  They tend to have been owned in the past by rich noble families.  Most have a little museum and beautiful gardens to wander around.  The botanical gardens in Soller and Bunyola provide tranquil places to relax and enjoy and the former, in particular, are a botanists dream.

Whilst some of the land is still privately owned, there are many beautiful walks, and some have visitor centres and offer accommodation.

Beauty Spots & Caves

 Coves des Correus porto cristo

Many of the most famous beauty spots in Mallorca can be found around the coastline. The Cap de Formentor and Sa Calobra are amongst the favourites.  The geology of Mallorca has also encouraged the formation of spectacular caves, some of which are so large that evening concerts are held in them.  The rugged Tramuntana mountain range hide many isolated viewpoints, particularly is you are prepared to walk a little.

Theme Parks, Water Parks & Aquariums

Water parks are hugely popular in Mallorca, and can be found all over the island.  In addition, there are safari parks, sealife parks and aquariums to enjoy.  And don't miss Poble Espanyol, where Spain gets the theme-park treatment in the outskirts of Palma, where reproductions of famous buildings from Cordoba, Toledo and Madrid are gathered together with typical houses from the Spanish regions.

Shopping in Palma

 palma shopping street

The main shopping areas in Palma are Avinguda Jaume III and the Passeig des Born for up-market boutiques, and the pedestrian streets around Placa Major for small specialist shops. There is also a modern shopping mall and hypermarket complex - the Centro Comercial Porto Pi - 2km from the centre. For the shopper, the relatively small size of Palma is of great advantage.
