Buses in Mallorca
An efficient system of buses connects Palma to all the main towns in Mallorca, and there are also number of more local routes. Most buses out of Palma leave from the Placa d'Espanya and you can pick up a timetable from the tourist information kiosk on the square. Most services operate at a reduced level from Nov. to Apr. There are two 'mainline' railway lines in Mallorca connecting Palma to Manacor and Sa Pobla - both lines go via Inca. The other railway takes the vintage train from Palma to Soller, following a wonderfully scenic route.

Taxis can be hired at ranks (indicated by a blue square with a 'T'), on the street (by flagging down those with a green light), or at hotels. They are good value within Palma but expensive over long distances. A list of tariffs is displayed at taxi ranks. Your hotel receptionist can also help you to call a taxi.
Ferries to Mallorca
Ferries run from mainland Spain - ports include Barcelona, Alicante (Denia) and Valencia. Crossing times vary between six and eight hours for a traditional ferry or just under four hours for a catamaran crossing. Inter-Balaeric islands ferries run daily and take between two and four hours for Mallorca (Palma) to Ibiza, and one to three hours for a Mallorca (Alcudia) - Menorca crossing.

One of the easiest ways to explore the island is to pick up a hire car and drive along one of the many country lanes. Mallorca is fairly large and it would take many days to drive through and around the whole island. The roads in the west of the island in particular are very beautiful - the twisting mountainous roads take you to glorious viewpoints and charming villages. Journey times always take longer than you think - particularly in summer when the roads are busy, but also because you will want to stop regularly to take in the scenery and the views.
