Over 1,200 sailors, on board 120 registered boats, will take to the waters of the bay of Palma this week for the annual Copa del Rey Regatta. Organised by the Real Club Náutico of Palma and sponsored by Audi and Mapfre, the competition is one of the most prestigious in the Mediterranean, attracting world class sailors.

Two new racing classes, Melges 32 and J-80, have been added for this 30th edition of the regatta. There is also more focus on ‘real time' sailing. And organisers are delighted with the number of teams competing; last year the number of boats registered was just 89.

The first races are held today with the competition running for six days. The prize giving ceremony will take place on Saturday evening in the gardens of Ses Voltes, next to Palma Cathedral.
