Visitor number up but temperatures down in Mallorca this May

Mallorca Airport has beaten last year's visitor numbers and hotels in Mallorca are reporting a ten point increase on the occupancy figures from May last year, despite May being colder than in previous years.

Average temperatures in Mallorca this May we four degrees lower than normal but on the bright side there was 60% less rainfall than is expected for this time of year.

Although it may have been colder in Mallorca than meteorologists were expecting the visitor numbers were higher than this time last year. Tour operator groups have reported that visitor numbers are up with Nordic and German visitors increasing by 5% from last year and the island seeing a 10% increase in the number of Brits. The south west coast from Playa de Palma to Magaluf has been benefiting from this surge in early summer sun seekers and the capitol has also seen more visitors than last year.

As we move into June visitor numbers are expected to increase as the summer moves into full swing and fortunately the temperatures are expected to rise. Although some forecasters have been predicting the coldest summer since 1816; “The year of no Summer” forecasters in Mallorca are more optimistic.

On Monday the French weather station Meteo France said there was a 70% chance that the current weather patterns could lead to another summer like that seen in 1816 but forecasters in Mallorca disagree with this prediction. Meteo France uses an American system based on extrapolations of ocean currents and averages that has a large margin for error and Gili Miquel, a spokesperson for Island Meteorological Centre, said that these predictions “are not very reliable” and the Centre expects to see temperatures rise from the beginning of June.

Hopefully Mallorca will continue to enjoy a dry sunny summer and full hotels in the coming months. You can see live pictures of the conditions in Alcudia, Palma and Port Soller on our Seemallorca webcams.
