Air passenger duty increases could hit Mallorca

Easyjet released research yesterday showing proposals to change air passenger duty would reduce passenger numbers by three million and cost 77,000 jobs a year. Published in March, the government proposals would increase air passenger duty from £12 to £16 on flights up to 2,000 miles. The rates and number of tax bands on long haul flights would be reduced.

The report, commissioned by Easyjet and conducted by Frontier Economics, claims the changes would actually increase CO2 emissions by up to 360,000 tonnes a year by encouraging more long haul flights. Easyjet is recommending a per-plane rather than a per-person tax, stating this would encourage the industry to fly more efficiently.

The Balearics currently represent better value for money in flight terms than many other popular destinations given their proximity to the UK. It is felt holiday numbers could be affected if flight prices to the islands increase.
