Five American hostages and some 400 foreign workers have been evacuated from Algeria, arriving in Mallorca before flying to the UK or Duabi. The workers were flown to Mallorca at around 3am on Friday and put up in Palma's Tryp hotel.

Those on the flights to Palma have now been flown on to Gatwick and some to Dubai as there was a mix of expats, Indian and Pakistani workers who have been evacuated from Algeria.

Included in the group of British expats in Palma were construction workers who were working 500km from the In Amenas gas plant on developments in Ain Salah.

This group was the first of many operations to evacuate foreign workers from Algeria due to attacks linked to Al-Qaeda.
