Balearics improve tax evasion detection

The Balearic tax office said yesterday that the amount of unpaid tax in the islands was €54.7 million in 2010, up 42.5% from 2009. This amount equates to 12% of tax payable to central Government. Balearic agency inspectors have discovered an additional €22 million in unpaid taxes this year, as opposed to €7.6 million in 2009.

These figures make the Balearics the top region in Spain for successfully collecting taxes that were legitimately owed. The total amount of tax collected has risen 2.8%, mainly due to contributions from an increased inheritance tax and the higher rate of VAT (18%) that was introduced in July 2010.

Local taxes in Mallorca for most of the islands councils are down, with the average tax collection being 9.1% lower than in 2009.
