British endurance swimmer Anna Wardley became the first Woman to swim the channel from the island of Cabrera to Mallorca last Saturday.

Anna set off at 7.38am on Saturday morning and arrived on the beach at Sa Rapita just after 8pm. The 37 year old from Gosport in Hampshire covered the 27.02km using around 41000 stokes and had to deal with jelly fish and strong currents.

“It was a tough swim as I had to swim through some huge shoals of jellyfish and have got some nasty cigarette burn like stings as a result. “We also got caught by a counter current on our approach to Sa Rapita which made the final hours of the swim really challenging as I felt like I was swimming on the spot for around three hours.”

Last year Anna began her Five Islands campaign, a challenge that will see her swim around five Islands and cover a distance of 150 miles, by swimming round the Mallorcan Island of Sa Dragonera. Anna has now completed two of the swims in her challenge and has spent the last four weeks training in Mallorca for the remaining three swims.

Ahead of her are the Islands of Jersey, Wight and Tiree and if the cold water and strong currents weren't enough all of Anna's swims must be completed without a wetsuit or goggles to be officially ratified by the British Long Distance Swimming Association.

Last weekends 27km swim from Cabrera should stand her in good stead as she faces the remaining three islands as the largest swim ahead of her is round the Isle of Wight which is 30km. However the bitterly cold water and strong currents of Tiree also provide a daunting challenge that the warm waters of the Mediterranean have not afforded her yet.

Anna's second challenge is to raise £50 000 for charity and you can donate to her Turing the Tide campaign on line.
