Thomas Swannell, the British tourist accused of killing a man outside a bar in Magaluf has been sentenced to six years in prison.

Swannell, 48, was accused of stabbing 42 year old Gary Vigors with a broken bottle outside a bar in Magaluf in March 2011. The accused was originally due to stand trial in June for voluntary homicide but the sentence was handed down yesterday and Mr Swanell will serve a total of six years in jail.

Gary Vigors had been in Mallorca for a few hours when the attack happened and details about how the fight that resulted in his death are still unclear. His Father, David Vigors a retired policeman told BBC journalists in February; "It was two years ago but it's still raw,"
"It's been very, very difficult. We still don't know what really happened; why there was some sort of argument and Gary got attacked."

Although it was thought that prosecutors would push for a sentence of between 15 and 20 years the sentence was reduced to six years and €177,000 in compensation when a deal was struck between the defense lawyer and the prosecution. As he has spent the last two years on remand in Mallorca Mr Swannell will serve another four years before being released and has been given the choice of serving the remainder of his sentence either in Mallorca or back in the UK.
