Jaume, the first child born in the coastal town of Can Picafort in the North of Mallorca, died unexpectedly last Friday aged 99.

The life of this fisherman, a man who knew the secrets of the Bay of Alcudia better than anyone, has always been linked to Can Picafort, since the day he was born in the coastal village. It was in 1915 when Can Picafort was just a pine forest and there was little or no indication that it would become one of the main tourist areas of Mallorca.

A living memory in his home town, he had seen the major development and evolution of it into a tourist destination. His family started a small catering business and Jaume Mandilego was linked to the sea from a very early age.

Unmistakable with his big glasses, a sailors hat and especially his white moustache that was the only feature to differentiate him from his brother Pau. The town of Can Picafort gave him a bust (sculpture) a few years ago in a square opposite the port.

Like all good fisherman, the sea and his boat were always in his life, right until the last moments. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by the town.
