Following the controversial departure of Michael Laudrup, Joaquin Caparros has been appointed the new coach of RCD Mallorca. The fifty five year old Andalusian has signed a nine month deal with the club, taking them to the end of the current season.

The veteran coach said he felt privileged to be considered for the position. He also acknowledged the recent problems at the club, culminating in Laudrup's departure just five games into the season, saying the key to their success in La Liga would be ‘unity, collective effort' and ‘thinking and acting as a team'.

Caparros had a brief career as a footballer before turning to coaching in his 20s. He has worked at numerous clubs including Villareal, Sevilla, Deportiva La Coruna and Athletic Bilboa. Last season he led Athletic to a sixth place finish in La Liga. His most recent post, at Swiss club Neuchatel Xamax, came to an end after just five games.

Caparros got straight down to business yesterday, with a training session at the Bibiloni stadium. The team's first match under their new coach is on 15th October, at home against Valencia. It will take place at the Iberostar stadium.
