The Balearic Island Port Authority has tendered the work to extend the Port in Palma to make berthing possible for the new generation of super cruisers made by companies like Royal Caribbean.

The plan is to increase the capacity of the berth in the port by 130 m to make it possible for vessels like “Oasis of the Seas” to dock in Palma de Mallorca.

Oasis of the seas is part of the Royal Caribbean fleet and is currently the largest cruise ship in the world at 361 meters with a displacement of 100 000 metric tons, slightly less than a US Aircraft Carrier. The ocean liner has a space on board for 6300 passengers and 2400 crew with a zip line, climbing wall, surf machine, five swimming pools, a casino and night club to keep everyone entertained.

The contract to extend the harbour is worth 5.6 million Euros and is part of Palma de Mallorca's attempt to make Palma a destination where cruises start and stop rather than just a stop over point for the cruise ships.
