Cruise tourism increases by 25% in the Balearic Islands

The Balearic Islands are the second most popular destination for cruise ships in Spain this year, after Barcelona. 783,592 cruise passengers visited the islands during the period January to July 2010. This represents nearly a 25% increase in numbers compared to the previous year.

The popularity of cruising the Mediterranean continues to grow as more people discover the variety and value to be had on a cruise holiday. The industry is booming, with year on year growth, and substantial investment in building new ships. 14 new ships will have been launched by the end of this year, with another 16 ships being planned for completion by the end of 2012.

The port of Palma broke records this August when it dealt with six vessels, five of which weighed over 100,000 tonnes, each having a capacity of 3,000 passengers. The port continues to invest in its infrastructure in anticipation of a continued increase in cruise popularity.
