featured in News & reviews Author Nicola Henderson, Site Editor Updated

Cruise holidays are expected to continue to grow in popularity during 2011 as it was revealed that 7.3 million people took a cruise last year - up 17.7% from 2009. Palma received over 500 cruise ships last year, carrying around 1.3 million passengers.

Docking in Palma de Mallorca has become so popular with cruise ships that the Port Authority is having to construct a berth in the Poniente docks for large cruise ships, costing 28 million euros. This investment will provide simultaneous mooring for five cruise ships of 300 meters in length.

Cruises in the Mediterranean have become the scond most popular destination world-wide (after the Carribean) and each year, the choice of cruise lines and itineries becomes more varied. Nine cruise lines currently sail in the Mediterranean, and it seems that British cruisers are especially keen, with 43% of them choosing the warm weather, smooth sailing & rich cultural heritage that the Mediterranean offers. The popularity of cruises is also a reflection of value for money and unrivaled variety that is available.

Cruise passengers stopping off in Palma de Mallorca can choose from a variety of day trips into the island, or enjoy the many sights and attractions of Palma.
