Demand for holidays to Mallorca on the up

featured in News & reviews Author Nicola Henderson, Site Editor Updated

Sales of holidays to Mallorca are up 12% on last year's figures for the UK holiday industry. UK tour operators are reporting that some of their hotels are nearly full for the month of June, and that they have been asked to stop selling rooms at these places.

The demand is such that Spanish tour operators are worried that there may be no rooms left in the peak summer months for Spanish nationals, who normally make up the majority of holiday makers to Mallorca.

These are the best figures that Majorca has seen in three years and is due to a number of factors. British holidaymakers started booking their holidays earlier than normal partly due to the well-priced Spanish holidays that were on offer for early bird bookings, and because of the cold and snowy Christmas that the country experienced. The recent unrest in North Africa has also re-directed visitors who may have considered Tunisia or Egypt for their holidays. Add to this the price hike of 25% that Turkish holidays have introduced this year, and it's easy to see why Spain has become the popular destination choice for 2011.
