One of the biggest and most spectacular celebrations of the year takes place this weekend in Palma. Holy week on Mallorca is not just a religious celebration celebrating the resurrection of Christ but also a popular tradition.

There have been celebrations since Palm Sunday on the first but it's this weekend that the major processions take place. Today's Holy Burial is one of the most spectacular and will be held in nearly all the major towns on the Island. One of the best places to see this is in Pollenca. An image of the body of Christ is carried in a procession down the 365 stone steps from the chapel at the top of the hill to the square below. There are also festivities in Arta, Felanitx and at the monastery at Lluc. The figure of Jesus is followed by figures dressed in long pointed hoods and the procession in Palma brings hundreds of people to the streets.

The holy week finishes this Sunday with the "procession of the meeting" which symbolises Mary meeting the risen Christ for the first time after his resurrection. In the evening there is a Mass in Palma which is the most important of the year. The ceremony is led by the Bishop of Mallorca and many other of the islands priests attend. The highlight of the service is the renewal of the sacramental oils, which come from Bunyola and are blessed along with water, bread and wine.

Even though the Holy week officials runs from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday there are more celebrations and events in the following week. Starting on Easter Monday and culminating in "Angel Sunday" (the Sunday after Easter).

The Easter Monday celebrations take place in most villages across the island and traditional Easter food such as "panades", "robiols" and "crespells" are eaten.

The final day of the celebrations are on Angel Sunday and there is usually a festive day at Bellever Castle just outside the capital organised by the town council.
