Engergy saving cuts mean darker roads in Mallorca at night

In a bid to reduce electricity bills, the Council of Mallorca will no longer light up 17% of lampposts on its dual carriageways and motorways. A spokesman for the council said the move is expected to save 1.6 million euros.

In total there are currently 4,700 lampposts lighting major road across the island. The council has stressed that the changes will only affect stretches of road where light is deemed unnecessary. Lampposts at entrances and exits to major roads will remain in working order.

The council hopes to review roadside lighting in the next phase of the energy saving exercise, potentially replacing existing lamps with newer, more efficient lighting as well as lowering bulb brightness. Combined, these changes are expected to save the cash-strapped council nearly a third on their electricity bill.
