Fires on east of Mallorca under control

Over 100 fire fighters fought to contain two separate fires on the east of Mallorca yesterday. The alert for the fire near Maria de la Salut was given at just before 4pm with the second blaze, between Arta and Sant Lllorenc, being reported just minutes later.

A strong wind from the south east and dry conditions meant the fires spread quickly. Dozens of homes and a hotel were evacuated and an elderly couple had to be rescued. Four roads were closed as smoke led to poor visibility. Emergency services were still monitoring the Arta fire this morning although it was said to be under control.

In total over 500 hectares have been affected by the blazes, mainly wooded areas and farmland. No casualties have been reported.
