Flights from Majorca may get more expensive

Ryanair may charge additional fees for flights already booked

Flights from Mallorca may become more expensive and some passengers may be charged additional fees by their airline if the Spanish Parliment passes the proposed budget.

"The Spanish budget proposes to double passenger charges at Madrid and Barcelona airports, as well as imposing smaller increases at other Spanish airports." Said Stephen McNamara of Ryan Air.

The proposed hike in passenger charges at Palma Airport is less than in these two mainland cities but it has already come under fire from the Mallorcan Tourist Board who sent official letters of complaint to the Spanish government describing the proposals as "unfair" and that the rise in prices will hurt the tourism industry.

It remains to be seen whether or not the proposals will pass through parliament but in the last three years airport taxes have risen thirty percent so it doesn't seem unlikely.

This move has angered the tourist board in Mallorca as well as hoteliers but what looks set to upset tourists is that Ryanair have announced that if the taxes do go ahead they will be charging customers who have already paid for their flight for the additional cost.

Ryanair sent it's passengers an e-mail saying that they have been "advised by the Spanish Government of a budgetary proposal to increase airport charges later this month. We are advising customers with a reservation that includes a flight departing from a Spanish airport that we may be forced to debit passengers for any Government-imposed increases in airport charges prior to your travel date.
Once the Spanish government budget is published Ryanair will advise affected passengers by email of any additional airport charges that may apply to your reservation before any charges are made."

So if you're flying with Ryanair and your flights are all booked and paid for you may still be asked to pay an additional fee to cover the cost of the new airport tax, oh and if you want to take a musical instrument with you that will cost an extra £50 too.
