The countdown to the Global Ocean Race began with the official opening of the race village last Friday. The round the world yacht contest begins in Palma on 25th September and is expected to end there in May 2012. It is the first edition of the GOR to start in Mallorca, with organisers planning to retain the location for what will become a biennial event.

The course for the Global Ocean Race will take in some of the roughest waters on the planet. Starting in Palma de Mallorca, the race stops in Cape Town, South Africa; Wellington, New Zealand; Punta del Este, Uruguay and Charleston, USA before finishing back in Mallorca, a total of approximately 30,000 nautical miles.

Six double-handed teams are due to undertake the challenge, including the ‘Mallorca Challenge' team; local yachtsman, Hugo Ramon, is representing the island alongside his co-skipper Conrad Colman, from New Zealand.

The race village is located in front of the Auditorium, close to the start and finish point. Around 1,000 metres squared, the village houses the sponsors and various bodies involved in organising and running the race and will be host to numerous events and presentations over the coming weeks.

Entry to the village is free to the public with organisers aiming to give visitors an insight into one of the sailing world's toughest challenges as well as promoting ocean racing on in general.
