Greenpeace warns against drilling for oil at press conference in Palma de Mallorca

Greenpeace representative, Sara Pizzinato, highlighted the dangers of oil exploration on the Spanish coastline yesterday. Speaking at a press conference in Palma de Mallorca she warned that by authorising Cairn Energy to drill, central government risked provoking a disaster similar to the spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

The Scottish oil company has a license to drill in five areas between the Gulf of Valencia and Ibiza, some 1,400 metres below sea level. In the Gulf of Mexico, British Petroleum was drilling at a depth of 1,500 metres when a wellhead snapped. Millions of gallons poured into the sea causing widespread damage to the marine ecosystem and coastline.

The environmental group feels the risk of exploring this patch of the Mediterranean outweighs the limited chance of finding crude oil. Pizzinato said that the coast of Spain is already suffering from the effects of climate change and that a potential spill would have a devastating effect on both the tourism and fishing industries.
