Just weeks after the fire that destroyed over 2000 hectares in the south west of Mallorca was extinguished anther fire has ignited in the north east of the island between the towns of Arta and Capdepera.

The fire was reported at 22:00 yesterday evening and has already destroyed 450 hectares of forest and scrub land in Llevant Natural Park in the north east of the island. Local sources report that 180 people were evacuated late last night and as the fire grew in size it could be seen from the neighboring island of Menorca.

Most of the towns evacuated were deemed safe and the majority of people were able to return to their homes but the Sports Centre in Capdepera was opened and became home for the night for some residents of the area.

Fire fighters from Manacor, Arta and Alcudia along with 130 members of the Balearic Institue of Nature (Ibanat) and some 40 military personnel were called in to tackle the blaze which effected parts of Cala Mesquida and Cala Torta. The efforts of the fire fighters were successful in preventing the spread of the fire further in these areas but it is still unclear whether they can prevent the flames moving into Cala Barbassa.

As yet the cause of the fire is unknown.
