Iberia airlines has decided to stop all services from the Balearics to the mainland and to concentrate instead on international long haul flights. It will be flying its last plane from Palma de Mallorca to Madrid this Saturday, the 16th of April. This marks the end of a 76 year service connecting the Balearic Islands to the Spanish mainland.

The airline has said that its low cost subsidiary Vueling will benefit from the switch in strategy. Vueling already flies to Barcelona, Madrid and Bilbao from Palma de Mallorca, and will add the slots released by Iberia to its service. Iberia will continue to operate their inter-Balearic island flights between Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza via their other subsidiary, Air Nostrum.

Other airlines that connect Mallorca with mainland Spain include Spanair, Air Berlin, Air Europa and Ryanair. Air Berlin also offers inter-island flights to Ibiza and Menorca.
