It's official! The Spanish air strike is off

Spanish airport workers yesterday voted overwhelmingly call off the strikes that would have crippled Spanish airspace this Easter and over the summer. Around 8000 (80%) of the workforce voted in yesterday's referendum, of which 70% supported the agreement made last week between the union leaders and AENA (the airport authority).

Earlier in March, the unions had called for 22 days of strike action in protest against the governments plans to part-privitise the airports and the potential impact that would have on its members. Last week an agreement was reached between the unions and AENA that guaranteed working conditions would not be adversly affected and that jobs would be protected.

Now that the threat of airport strikes has gone, the Mallorcan tourism industry hope that bookings for the summer will rebound back to the levels seen at the beginning of the year. And with meteorologists predicting a warmer than usual spring & summer here in Majorca, it looks like 2011 will be a bumper year for both visitors and the struggling Spanish economy.
