Laudrup stepping down as Mallorca coach

The coach for RCD Mallorca, Micheal Laudrup, expressed his desire to leave the club on Tuesday in a move he says is ‘for the good of the team'. An agreement regarding the early termination of his contract was reached that afternoon.

The announcement came after on-going disagreements between Laudrup and the club's board. His number two at the club, Erik Larsen, was sacked earlier this week for criticising the board's policies in the Danish media. Laudrup had, himself, expressed frustration at the transfer policy this summer, which he felt left him short of forwards.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of football he debuted in Denmark and went on to win four La Liga championships with Barcelona and a fifth with their arch rivals Real Madrid. He took charge of RCD Mallorca at the end of the 2009/10. Laudrup guided Mallorca to a 17th-place finish last season as the one-time Copa del Rey winners avoided relegation by just one point. His contract was due to expire at the end of this season.
