Low cost airlines key to entice British visitors to Mallorca

The Balearic government is on a mission this week at the World Travel Market in London to improve air links between the UK and Mallorca. The lack of flights, particularly in the winter season is seen as a major reason for falling numbers in British visitors. In the 1980's, 40% of all foreign visitors to Majorca were British; the number now is closer to 25%.

Representatives from the government have been meeting with the low cost airlines Monarch, Easyjet and Jet2 to negotiate improvements to flight schedules. With over 50% of British visitors arranging their holidays independently of a travel agent, there is a large market for the airlines to tap into. Discussions earlier this summer resulted in new connections between the UK and Majorca and were largely credited for the strong finish to the summer tourist season.

New routes by Jet2 from East Midlands and Glasgow will commence next year, along with the return of the CityFlyer route from London City to Palma operated by British Airways. Monarch will also add more services to their London Gatwick and Manchester routes. Easyjet will continue to provide a comprehensive service through the winter season and into 2011.

Mallorca is currently being promoted at the World Travel market as a destination that offers more than just sunshine and sand. Spa & wellness, and nature and sports tourism are all being highlighted as the island tries to change it's perceived image of a package holiday destination. Mallorcan wine is also being showcased at the fair, to demonstrate the islands gastronomical credentials.
