Mallorca & Balearics tourism enjoys strong finish to summer season

Spanish tourism watchdog Frontur have released figures showing that Majorca & the Balearic Islands saw a 9.4% increase in numbers of visitors this September compared to 2009. The British continue to flock to the islands, along with Germans and increasing numbers of French and Italians.

The late summer surge of visitors to Mallorca in August and September has helped salvage the 2010 season which began so badly with the Icelandic ash cloud and airline & air traffic control strikes. A strong performance in the cruise ship sector has also helped with tourist numbers.

Whilst numbers may have increased, there is still some debate over the success of the season in terms of consumer spend, as many holidays were sold this year at discounted prices, meaning profit margins are slender.

However, the prospects for 2011 are positive. Further increases in cruise ship tourism is set for 2011 and there have been reports of strong sales for summer holidays in Majorca in 2011.
