The newly launched scheme to clean the waters around Mallorca's beaches has collected 1.2 tons of waste from the sea in the first two weeks.

The operation coordinated by the Balearic Agency of Water and Environmental Quality uses 23 boats to patrol the waters around Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca and Formetera collecting rubbish from the water around the beaches. In June 4,040kg of rubbish was collected from the sea around the four islands improving the appearance of the beaches.

In Mallorca the team of nine boats gathered over a ton of rubbish in the first fortnight of work and the boats will continue to patrol until September, keeping the bathing waters around Mallorca clean and clear.
