Sant Jaume, or James the son of Zebedee, is a big deal in Mallorca. Streets in Palma and the rest of the island bear his name and this week there are festivals in Alcudia, Sa Pobla, Binissalem, Algaida, Santanyi and Calvia. It seems like almost everywhere in Mallorca is celebrating the life of the disciple, except maybe Magaluf where everyone is looking forward to Jessie J.

The love for Sant Jaume, who is the Patron Saint of Spain as well as many towns in Mallorca comes from the belief that in AD 40 "James the Greater" preached on the south west coast of Spain and then returned 800 years later to fight in the battle of Clavijo against the Moors after which he was sometimes known as "Moorslayer".

To celebrate this remarkable achievement and honour the the Saint all over Mallorca this week there will be fireworks, concerts and parties.

One of the best will probably be in Alcudia where Jaume is the Patron Saint. Alcudia has a busy schedule of celebrations this year that culminates with a firework display on Wednesday 25th at midnight in the Placa Charles V that should be quite spectacular.
