Mallorca hopes to gain from strong pound

Brits to benefit from better value holidays

featured in News & reviews Author Nicola Henderson, Site Editor Updated

With Europe undergoing an economic crisis of confidence, the British pound has surged in value over the past few months against the Euro. Sitting at just under €1.25, the pound is at it's strongest since 2008. The Mallorcan government hopes that the Brits will take advantage of this rate and will increase both hotel and holiday bookings, and also help kickstart the real estate sector.

And when the British do arrive in Majorca, they will find that the main supermarket chain, Eroski, will be stocking their favorite items from home. Eroski will have brands such as Weetabix, Walkers crisps, Magners cider and Colemans sauces on its shelves this summer. The supermarket chain is also increasing its stock of German favorites, plus French, Italian, South American brands amongst others, as it tries to make all nationalities feel at home on Mallorca.

With a mini heatwave in Majorca over this past weekend, with temperatures reaching 27 degrees centigrade, the island looks set for a good season. To find out more about Mallorca, take a look at our article on Where to Holiday in Mallorca.
