Mallorca's bumper holiday season continues into October

Hotel occupancy is best ever this October in Mallorca

Hotels in Mallorca had already reported that they were extending their holiday season by two weeks due to the influx of bookings that they received for the Autumn months. Visitors are coming from all over Europe and staying in most of the beach resorts across the island such as Palmanova, Alcudia, Cala Major and Pollenca.

This influx of tourism means that hotels and apartments in Mallorca are seeing an average occupancy of 70%, the highest level of occupancy for four years. Hoteliers say that after the 16th of October there is a significant drop in bookings, but it will still be 16% higher than last year.

Although the summer has been so successful this year, it is just not possible to extend the season any further than October as flight operators only run a reduced schedule or no flights at all to Mallorca from November until March. This year does see improvements in the winter flight schedule (see our report Flights to Mallorca from the UK) and it is expected that around 10% of hotels in the coastal resorts will remain open. Palma, of course, remains open throughout the year.

With record passenger numbers travelling to and from Palma's Son Sant Joan airport it is no wonder that during the summer season from June to September, tourist resorts have not had an occupancy lower than 90%, according to the Association of Hotelier in Mallorca.

The resort of Platja de Palma will end it's season will an average occupancy of around 60-70%. There has been some disappointment in the season at Platja de Palma which local businesses blame on the delay to the Comprehensive Reform Plan. The lack of upgrades to hotels in the resort has resulted in less bookings as it has been demonstrated that 4-star resort hotels are the most popular with visitors throughout the peak season.
