Mallorca's wine production on the increase

featured in News & reviews Author Nicola Henderson, Site Editor Updated

The wine industry is booming in Mallorca, with new figures showing that 27% more wine was produced in 2010 compared to the previous year. Over 5 million litres with the quality approved DO (designation of origin) mark were produced, 66.5% of which was red wine, with white (23.4%) and rose (10.1%) making up the balance.

The two main wine regions in Majorca are Binissalem & Pla i Llevant, which account for 62% of local Balearic production. Mallorcan wine has been growing in popularity in recent years, with investment coming from Germany and other northen European countries. At the moment, the wine producers believe that their production is matched by public demand.

New markets are opening up for Mallorcan wine, and together with increased consumption by existing customers, the prospects for the wine makers remain positive. However, the regulatory council of Binissalem warns that over production could lead to a drop in prices and that the balance between supply and demand should be carefully monitored.
