Mallorca to outsource hiking hostels to cut losses

Pont Roma in Pollenca & Can Boi in Deia will be auctioned to find new management

The Consell de Mallorca are to privatise the management of two out of the five hostels along Mallorca's famous week-long hike, the Dry Stone Walk. The Pont Roma hostel in Pollenca and the Can Boi refuge in Deia will from now be managed privately.

Last year the five shelters along the route managed to produce a debt of €600,000 despite cuts in spending of 29% last year. It is hoped that the privatisation of these two hostels will help pay this off this large debt.

Companies wishing to take over the management of the hostels will need to bid for it and the winners will have a two year contract which can be renewed at the end of this period depending on their success. The new managers will also be charged a fee of €2000 per year.

The Consell have said that it is only the management they will be outsourcing to private companies and not the ownership of the hostels. They therefore say that the service at these two hostels will be the same as the others on the Dry Stone Route and will continue to offer the same prices and services.

The Dry Stone walk runs from Port d'Andratx in the south west of Mallorca, all the way to Pollenca in the north west, following ancient cobbled paths through the Tramuntana mountain range. The 135km hike generally takes eight days and there are hostels located at the end of each stage for hikers.
