Mallorca's bee population in decline

Recent studies show that Mallorca's bee population has declined dramatically in the past few years. In some areas numbers are said to be down by up to a massive 60%. And the issue is not confined to Mallorca. Across North America and Europe the news of dwindling bee populations is causing consternation amongst both farmers and scientists.

There are several theories behind what has been labelled ‘colony collapse disorder'. Pollution, climate change, pesticides, mites and mobile phone aerials have all been cited as possible causes.

Given around one third of our food comes from crops that are pollinated by bees, the consequences to man and the planet could be catastrophic. Such is the concern that in 2010 the EU increased funding for apiary research projects over the next three years from €26 million to €32 million.
