Mallorcan local Rafael Nadal has confirmed that he intends to play in the upcoming Basel Open which kicks off in the Swiss city on Monday 20th October.

With Nadal's recent diagnosis of appendicitis and his subsequent loss in the first round of the Shanghai Masters to fellow Spaniard Lopez, it was unclear whether he would regain his health & fitness to complete the 2014 season. The loss also meant losing out on the No 2 World Ranking which in turn went to his biggest rival Roger Federer.

After receiving treatment on his home Island of Mallorca, Nadal has returned to training on the courts at Manacor in preparation for the battles ahead at the Swiss open in Basel, where he will no doubt try to upset things and gain a better place in the rankings.

The Swiss player Roger Federer, who once served as a ball boy at the Swiss Indoors Basel, fittingly became the first player to win five titles at his hometown tournament in 2011. He will be defending his 2013 title and will need this victory if he is to have any chance of unseating Djokovic from World No 1!

So let battle commence and let's hope that Nadal can regain his strength and fitness after this bout of illness.
