The Environmental Department in Andratx launched a new campaign to reduce the number of cigarette buts on the beaches in Mallorca.

The campaign comes as the department unveils it's new corporate logo with a pledge to keep the beaches around Andratx clean and retain the Blue Flag Award held by the Camp de Mar beach.

The Blue Flag is awarded to beaches and Marinas that meet certain criteria related to environmental awareness, cleanliness and facilities and Camp de Mar is one of those beaches. Last year a special effort was made to ensure that the water around Camp de Mar was clean and they Mayor of the area stressed that the beach could not afford to be without the award and that all the amenities were available at the beach and that keeping it clean was the only thing that might prevent the prestigious flag being awarded.

Camp de Mar is a popular beach in and built up corner of the south west of Mallorca. It is fairly unique in that there is a small bridge linking the beach to a rocky outcrop that is home to a restaurant. The beach is a short drive from Andratx and surrounded by hotels, it has not yet been made clear how the department plans to implement the clean up and removal of cigarette buts but anything that keeps the beaches in Mallorca clean has to be welcomed as a positive initiative.
