Control centre & cameras to prevent spread of fires
The Balearic government is spending 100,000 euros on preventing forest fires in Mallorca with a new helicopter base at the old Son Bonet airpot, and a number of surveillance cameras in fire-prone areas.
The decision has been made since a large number of fires in recent year dessimated woodland in the South West and the North of the Island.
The new steps mean that surveillance cameras will feed back live images to the control centre, helping to tackle the blazes sooner and stop fires spreading by sending out rapid response crews sooner rather than later.
Mallorca has 2 helicopters, 4 specially adapted fire-fighting planes and around 350 fire fighters ready for action.
