No deal in initial talks between AENA & unions

The Spanish airport authority  AENA and the airport workers unions met twice yesterday in an attempt to resolve the on-going dispute and avoid strike action. The meetings ended without agreement or indeed, any progress, and no further dates have been announced for talks to resume.

The unions said that AENA had not addressed two key elements of the dispute, that of job protection and conditions of employment. The government plans to part-privatise the airports to raise €9 billion which would help reduce the countrys deficit. The unions fear that any privatisation of the airports will mean job losses, loss of worker concessions and harsher working conditions.

AENA for it's part has said that it will continue to seek agreement with the unions, as long as their demands are legally viable and will not affect the future competitiveness of the the airports.

Mallorca & the Balearics, and the Canaries will be worst hit by the proposed airport strike action due to the lack of alternative transportation for visitors and locals alike. The president of the Balearics, Francesc Antich remains confident however that the dispute will be resolved very soon.
