Organic markets in Mallorca continue to flourish
Locally produced organic food in Majorca appeals to a growing audience
The organic market in Santa Maria del Cami celebrated it's fifth year of operation yesterday with free tastings of locally produced organic foods. The market is held every Sunday morning in Plaza Nueva and attracts both locals and international second home owners in Mallorca.
Twelve vendors are currently involved in this enterprise, with more organic producers of both foodstuffs and natural cosmetics due to set up stalls in the immediate future. The demand for organic produce is growing in Majorca as the public become more aware of the need to protect the environment, and more importantly, the superior taste and flavour of organic fruit, vegetables & meat.
Around 29,000 hectares of land on Mallorca are now devoted to organic farming - close to 500 local farmers use organic practices. Local co-operatives such as Aixo es Vida are joining together to create baskets of selected 'ecologic' seasonal fruit & vegetables. Distribution points are all around the island.
Organic grains, organic cheese, organic pork, organic lamb & organic beef (Aberdeen Angus no less) are all available to buy on Mallorca - just look out for the 'Ecologic' sign at your local market. Lack of supply means it is quite difficult to get hold of organic chicken. Organic wine is another growth area with more and more producers turning to eco-friendly methods to produce their vintages.
