Palma de Mallorca Airport to start charging for luggage trolleys

€1 fee to be introduced in several of Spain's airports

Son Sant Joan airport in Palma de Mallorca will soon begin charging €1 for the use of luggage trolleys. The charge will apply to seven AENA airports including Palma, Madrid Barajas, Barcelona El Prat, Malaga, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, and Alicante. The charge is predicted to make €3.2 million at Madrid Barajas alone.

Consumer group FACUA opposes the introduction of the fee, and says that the luggage trolleys should remain free of charge as they are within a public space, plus passengers are already paying for flights and other airport charges, so why pay even more?

It's another unpopular charge that Mallorca's holiday makers will bear the brunt of, alongside this years increase in Eco tax on car rental companies.

AENA has yet to decide on a specific timetable for launching the fee at the various airports. We'll keep you posted.
